Steering Wheel Removal & Replacement (ARM 23)
Removal:
1. Remove the horn fuse to prevent sounding.
2. Turn the steering wheel to the straight ahead position to facilitate installation of the steering column alignment key later.
3. Stock steering wheel:
a. Pull the center horn button straight out to release its tabs from slots in the hub ring.
b. Unscrew four phillips head screws around the hub ring, lift off the wheel and hub ring, and disconnect the horn positive wire.
4. Momo steering wheel:
a. Lift out the horn button and disconnect the horn positive wire from the back.
b. Unscrew the socket head screws around the hub center and lift off the wheel.
5. Bend back the tab on the lock washer away from the nut using a large flat blade screw driver and small hammer.
6. Remove the steering wheel hub nut with a 1-1/16” socket and impact wrench.
7. Install a steering wheel puller by screwing bolts into the holes at the bottom of the hub. For the stock hub, use 2 long thin battery hold down bolts. For the Momo hub, use 2 large diameter bolts that came with the puller kit. Place a collar on the end of the center bolt of the puller and use a 5/8” socket to screw down to pull the hub out.
CAUTION: Behind the hub, the steering column shaft has a collar around it with a spring pushing it outward. As the hub is freed, the collar will push a half-moon alignment key out of a slot in the steering column. It may land on the floor below, or you may need a magnet to fish the key out of the plastic steering housing. The horn power contact button is also spring loaded and may pop out.
Reinstallation:
8. Press down on the edge of the steering column shaft collar with a large flat blade screw driver to compress the spring until the key slot is exposed.
9. Clamp a narrow vice grip around the steering column to hold the collar in place, keeping the the alignment key slot exposed.
10. Insert the half-moon key in the slot in the steering column.
11. Slide the steering wheel onto the column and engage the key way in the wheel with the key on the column. Continue pushing down while removing the vise grip from behind.
CAUTION: Be sure that the horn power contact button is still in place and contacting the ring on the back of the hub!
12. Slide on the lock washer and screw down the hub nut finger tight.
13. Test the horn’s operation before fulling tightening the hub nut.
14. Tighten down the hub nut with the impact driver. Bend up the lock washer tab. Reinstall the hub ring and wheel.
